Wind & Biodiversity

The R&D project is called “Integrated solutions for managing biodiversity in Wind Farms: bird and bat mitigation and compensation” (acronym: Wind & Biodiversity) and is a result of the important role that wind energy plays in the international energy policy to reduce climatic changes. Hence, it is crucial to ensure that the construction of wind farms is founded on good environmental management rules, establishing a compromise between economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation. This project becomes even more relevant in a context where the European Union has recently released a guide to enable the deployment of wind farms in Natura 2000 sites.

Corresponding to an investment of over 1.12 million EUR, the project is lead by Bio3 in partnership with the Aveiro University, which will participate mainly with two research units - the Associated Laboratory CESAM (Center for Environmental and Marine Studies) and IEETA (Institute of Electronics and Telematics Engineering of Aveiro).

The main goals of the project are, considering a period of 3 years:
• Understand the behavior and dynamics of birds and bats in wind farm locations;
• Understand all aspects of bird and bat real mortality registered in wind farms;
• Develop equipments and technology to mitigate or eliminate bird and bat mortality at wind farms;
• Develop, adapt and validate compensation measures to be implemented in wind farms with high mortality impacts on birds and/or bats;
• Develop integrated and sustainable management solutions/services adapted to each wind farm, according to its engineering and ecological context.

This project is co-financed by the national program of incentives for the Portuguese businesses and industry QREN (Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional), under the operational program “Mais Centro”, and with the support of the European Regional Development Fund in 801.507,70 €.
