The WFD and the ecological approach
The Water Framework Directive (WFD), transposed to the Portuguese legislation by the Lei da Água (Water Law - D.L. n.º 58/2005, December the 29th), promotes an integrated approach to water protection and management aiming to achieve the good status for all waters by 2015. The WFD highlights the assessment of water quality through an ecological approach.

Building the European Union's Natura 2000 - the largest ever network of protected areas
The European Union's Habitats Directive is now 20 years old, and its network of protected areas, known as Natura 2000, is nearing completion. After a slow start, the network now includes about 26 000 protected sites and covers approximately 18% of the EU's land surface as well as significant areas of the sea.

Bio3 supports the NATURDATA project
The Naturdata Project consists of a database, with diverse associated information, about the Portuguese biodiversity, a free access online portal and other activities with the main objective of increasing the knowledge and divulgation of the Portuguese biodiversity.
