Assessment of the Ecological Status of Water Bodies

Bio3 plans and executes assessments and monitoring programs under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). We monitor the biological quality elements under the WFD.

Biodiversity Surveys and Assessments

We develop and execute biological monitoring and assessments (habitats, flora, invertebrates, herpetofauna, birds, bats, wolf, etc.) regarding multiple projects or areas (renewable energy, linear infra-structures, coastal infra-structures, protected areas, etc.)

Strategic Environmental Assessment

We perform the Biodiversity section of Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA). Bio3 has developed a methodology for doing Appropriate Assessments regarding SEA in Nature 2000 Network Sites.

Biodiversity Tracking System

Online tool to track fauna tagged with platform transmitter terminals (PTT). Bio3 is specialized in the development of webGIS to organize and access online information related to the management, classification and conservation of biodiversity.

Biologist-dogs

At Bio3, we have teams of wildlife research dogs and handlers, trained to search and detect bird and bat carcasses in wind farms and power lines. These teams allow us to quantify with a high degree of accuracy the real impact of these infra-structures in biodiversity.
The accuracy of our detection dog-handler teams is over 96%, compared to 10% obtained with humans.

Wildlife Fatality Estimator

The “Wildlife Fatality Estimator” is a totally free online platform that can be used to estimate the bird and bat mortality rate associated to wind farms, power lines or other human infrastructures. This platform was developed by Bio3, in partnership with Regina Bispo, PhD (ISPA-Instituto Universitário e CEAUL-Centro de Estatística e Aplicações da Universidade de Lisboa).

Wind & Biodiversity

R&D project lead by Bio3 in partnership with the Aveiro University (Portugal). The main goal is to develop, during a 3 years period, the technologies and know-how necessary to reconcile wind farms with biodiversity (2011-2014)
